Famous Last Words

"Take my worlds apart"

You know, I'm getting really really angry with the commercialization of Christmas. At first, I didn't really see it so much, but now I do and it's horrible! I have seen all these commercials on TV that are saying the true meaning of Christmas is giving people the gifts they want, drinking Coca Cola, eating cheese (what's up with that?), going to certain places, making people happy, etc. And at the end of all these ads, they say "The real meaning of Christmas, or the season..." NO! That's not the TRUE meaning of Christmas! Get it right! If you want a holiday to be about presents and all that other stuff, create your own. Don't steal it from a very meaningful "holiday". Everything that has a lot of meaning to it, that is sacred to people's faith, have been made into some money making ploy by retailers and other people who don't believe in it. Fine. You don't believe in it, don't celebrate it. Don't steal a celebration from someone else and make it your own. Don't get me wrong, I'm very much into the Christmas thing, like decorating and buying people presents, but I also realize and remember why I'm doing this. I could careless if people didn't buy me anything! I like doing it for other people and to remember that Christmas is about the birth of Christ (hence CHRIST-mas).

Now, they're not even saying Merry Christmas anymore. It's Seasons Greetings or Happy Holidays. I think it's realy depressing that people have completely destroyed the meaning of it. Stupid Santa. One guy goes out and gives toys to some needy children, and they replace Jesus with this guy. I doubt he would have wanted to take over Christmas with Santa Claus and his reindeers and elves and all that fairy tale stuff. Kids these days aren't even being told the true meaning of Christmas anymore. You ask a kid at work what it is, and they say presents and Santa. It's sad, really. It goes to show you the sort of priorities people have these days. Especially with the commercials. I was actually really suprised watching TV the other day and the amount of money that people were spending. It made me sick. In one of them, all these guys got really expensive things, like laptops, Mp3 players, all these other gadgets. And another one the family bought a fireplace because the kid thought Santa wouldn't bring him toys if he didn't have a fireplace and then on top of that, they bought a bike and a remote control car, and some other expensive toys. What kind of message are we sending people? Now this kid thinks that whoever doesn't have a fireplace won't get toys. If he tells that to some other kid who doesn't have a fireplace, they're going to feel bad and maybe the parents aren't rich enough to spontaneously buy a friggin' fireplace for their kid! It's really ridiculous.

So when you're doing your Christmas shopping this year, think about why you're doing it and what it all truly means.

P.S. We need some snow up in here!

Very good point! I too have been surprised at how much people buy, for one, but how much people are into the whole Santa Claus thing. Like you said, it's pretty sad.

"Don't steal a celebration from someone else and make it your own."

As a matter of fact, this is exactly how Christmas came to be. The Romans used to have a festival to their god Saturn in December, called Saternalia. The Early Church felt that Christians should have something to celebrate in late December as well, so Chistians would not feel tempted to join in the very immoral Saternalia festival. So the Early Church descided to celebrate the birth of Christ in late December. So, in fact, we stole Christmas from the pagans.

Thor, who is looking forward to Christmas anyway.

Good post. Have you ever noticed that Christmas is a great time to be a "little person"? There seems to be no end of elves required for commercials.

Okay, Thor. But they created it on a completely different day as the pagans, so technically, we didn't steal Christmas. Ha!

Actually, Saternalia was a week long, or longer, and it took place at the end of the year, December. So it most likely occuring on the 25th.
